DIVERSIONS

Sport

Judo

I was the Men's Captain of the Cambridge Uni Judo Club for 2002-2003 and fought in the Varsity match and BUSA (where I won the u66 kg Men's Kyu grades). I recently graded up to 1st Kyu, so my focus now is on winning points towards my first dan.
I took up judo after ten year break, and got back into it with the Sydney Uni Judo Club.

Rowing at Trinity College

I noviced in Michaelmas, rowing in the 3rd Novice VIII until a judo injury side-lined me.

Other

I've been dabbling in college athletics - participation more than competition - in the 3000 m and the hammer.
Long runs along the Cam also keep me occupied.

Societies

Trinity BA Society

I'm was Catering rep in 2002. This meant I kept an eagle eye on the food and drink, and generally did committee stuff.

Australia New Zealand Society

This is the Social Society for Aussies and Kiwis in Cambridge (there are a lot of us). I was the President for 2002-2003.
Now in the capable hands of a new committee.

First and Third Trinity Boat Club May Ball

I was the Food Officer for the Trinity May Ball, one of the larger events of the Cambridge Calendar. One night, 2000 guests, 3000 oysters and vintage champagne... The next Ball will take place in June, 2004.

Various

Cooking

Food takes up quite a bit of my time.
  • I like cooking, and make the most of the two hobs and the oven across the road. Apart from random dinners, I've cooked a few larger meals this year, including a Szechuan banquet for 25.
  • I'm lucky to live near to the Cambridge Cheese Company - where they have fantastic cheese - of course - and an awesome selection of olives, charcuterie and deli items.
  • This is my cookbook library. I've left half of my books back in Australia, but thanks to the local discount bookstore- Galloway and Porter, my shelves are now overflowing.
  • I used to write an occasional cooking column in the Sydney Uni Rag Honi Soit. Most of them have since gone missing, but an interview I conducted can be found here, courtesy of the interviewee.

Dance

I've dabbled in dance since arriving at Cambridge. At first I tried the CDC's courses, but found them not to my liking, then tried some tango, but have settled on salsa.

Language

I'm trying to learn some spanish and improve my french - with the added incentive of cheap weekend flights to places where they actually speak the langauge.
I'd like to get a start on Chinese (Mandarin) by the end of the year.
